Dental Implants in Chelsea with American Smile

What is a dental implant?

Dental implants in London with American Smile Dentists in Chelsea. Sometimes called a tooth implant, they are placed next to or in between natural teeth to give our patients a stable and natural-looking new ‘tooth’ or ‘teeth’. It is an artificial titanium tooth ‘root’, placed in the jaw using high-precision oral surgery. Typically the implant will then support a crown or bridge, usually constructed from porcelain, in order to fill the gaps. If you have missing teeth, no other dental treatment comes as close as dental implants to recreating the look, feel and function of your natural teeth.

At American Smile, Dr Suraj is experienced at carrying out implant placements and associated procedures, such as laser gum surgeries and bone grafting. If you’re interested in getting dental implants in London, find out if this revolutionary treatment could be the solution for you with a free implant consultation.

We use Strauman implants for all the work we do at American Smile because Strauman’s implants are the global gold standard in implant and aesthetic dentistry. Engineered and produced in Switzerland, more than 17 million Straumann implants have been placed worldwide.

Single tooth dental implant

Teeth are designed to last a lifetime. However, people can lose their teeth due to a range of factors such as dental trauma, tooth decay and gum disease.

In such instances, replacing missing teeth is essential because it compromises your oral functionality and the resulting gaps can cause adjacent teeth to crowd, tip or fall out. This can then lead to a range of other health-related problems.

Why you might need a single tooth implant

A single dental implant is a straightforward tooth replacement so it can be your solution if you have:

  • a missing tooth
  • a loose tooth
  • a broken tooth
  • a cracked tooth
  • a tooth with a failed root canal
  • a ‘baby’ tooth / ‘milk’ tooth / ‘deciduous’ tooth
  • a tooth with a poor prognosis (for example, one that is badly decayed)
  • a tooth damaged as a result of an injury in contact sports such as rugby or hockey.

How long does a single tooth dental implant treatment take?

This can differ greatly from patient to patient but, during your initial consultation, we will develop and share a treatment plan with you.

As a guide, simple tooth implant cases (where the CBCT scan shows good bone quality and quantity), can be completed via 3-4 appointments over a 3-5 month period.

If an extraction is needed, a 2-4 month healing period is usually required before the implant is placed, although it may be possible to place the dental implant at the same time.

Multiple Teeth Implants

Don’t worry - if you have several missing teeth in a row you won’t need to have an implant for each tooth. Instead, we’ll use a bridge made up of several carefully-crafted crowns connected together to effectively conceal the gap. Whatever your situation, you can be certain that tooth implants will have no negative impact on your remaining natural teeth.

Your bespoke treatment plan for placing multiple implants will depend on how many teeth are missing/failing, their locations, whether or not they are next to each other and your personal jawbone volume. Many of the basic details are the same as single implants in that the implant consists of an artificial tooth root inserted into the jawbone, just like the root of a real tooth. After allowing 3-4 months for the implant to fuse with the surrounding bone, a crown (for a single missing tooth) or a bridge (for several teeth missing in a row) will be attached. The crowns or bridge will be matched to your natural teeth.

Same-day tooth / immediately-loaded implants

In some circumstances - when there is good bone quantity / quality – it is possible to extract a tooth and place an implant in the same appointment.

This is called a ‘same-day’ or ‘immediately-loaded’ dental implant. This can be paired with an immediate crown so that you can avoid any length of time with dentures or a gap.

Bone grafting

Once we lose teeth, we start to slowly lose the surrounding bone and soft tissues (gums). In fact, once a tooth is removed, 20% of the original bone and soft tissues are lost within the first six weeks. In order for a dental implant to be successful, the patient must have sufficient bone in the jaw for the implant to be placed, therefore bone grafting can be required to rebuild this lost bone.

During bone grafting, Dr Suraj will surgically expose a flap of gum at the site of the bone graft - placing the bone to be grafted onto the site and covering it with a protective membrane. This membrane is used to protect the bone from any microbiota (germs) found in the mouth and ensure that the area is perfectly clean to encourage the healing process. Finally, the flap of gum is replaced and stitched carefully back into place.

Implants Procedure at American Smile

  1. Planning
To help ensure the very best results for our patients, each case needs to be carefully planned. This may include:

    • A CBCT bone scan and radiographs (X-rays) to fully assess your teeth and supporting bone structure
    • Diagnostic wax-up, study models and surgical guide for further assessment and to help us show you the final result we’re hoping to achieve. These can be combined with the digital CT to make a precise surgical guide.
    • Photography for treatment assessment, planning and recording
  2. Preparing the implant site
Before placing the implant, we may need to remove any failing teeth. If this is the case, the tooth would be extracted and allowed to heal for a period of 6-12 weeks.

It may also be beneficial to perform a socket preservation procedure. This involves placing a bone substitute material into the socket to create as much bone as possible for the implant. We may use a temporary crown when we remove teeth to help maintain your smile.

  3. Implant placement
Usually this takes place 6-12 weeks after a tooth has been extracted. The procedure takes up to two hours and is performed under local anaesthetic to keep you comfortable throughout.
  4. Crown/ bridge/ denture placement
We usually wait a period of 6-16 weeks for the implant(s) to fully integrate into the surrounding bone. At this point, we can place the final crown or bridge.

Dental Implant FAQs

What is dental implant surgery?

Dental implant surgery is high-tech and minimally invasive. With the help of 3D iTero scanning, an implant can be placed so accurately that it involves the least possible trauma and ensures a swift recovery time. Once the implant has been placed in the jaw, you will need to wait a few weeks for the integration process to take place – this is where your natural bone tissue grows around the implant and secures it in place for life. Once this integration is complete you’ll be able to return to American Smile for the final fitting of your new tooth.
